Crawlspaces, sealed against moisture.
Closed cell spray foam for crawlspaces: insulation, a moisture barrier and a vapor barrier in one layer.
How we do it.
- Closed cell, 2 inches or more. It's a moisture barrier, a vapor barrier and an air barrier.
- Surfaces have to be dry.Moisture has to be below 8% before we spray.
- We need room to work.Foam is sprayed from 18 to 24 inches away, so the crawlspace needs clear access.
- Want it fully encapsulated?Encapsulation adds a vapor barrier with its own 10-year warranty.
Foam and thickness.
| Foam | Where it goes | Typical thickness | R-value per inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed cell | Crawlspace | 2 in + | R-7.6 to 8.1 |
R-value measures how well insulation holds back heat. Higher is better. Closed cell is rigid and also blocks moisture; open cell is softer and dampens sound. Ranges are from Universal Polymers (UPC) data sheets, tested at 1 inch. We choose the foam for each job. See the data sheets
Questions.
Can you spray wet or cold surfaces?
No. Moisture has to be below 8%, and spray foam is temperature sensitive, so we check conditions first.
Do you use an extension wand for tight spaces?
No. Foam has to be sprayed from 18 to 24 inches away to go on properly, so we need clear access.
How long before we can go back inside?
Contractors can go back in after 12 hours. Homeowners after 24 hours.
What's the warranty?
Our foam is covered for the life of the building, and the warranty transfers to the next owner. Crawlspace vapor barriers carry a 10-year warranty. It doesn't cover foam that's been torn into, or foam that wasn't properly covered where it needs paint, a coating or drywall. To make a claim, just call us.
